Brandie Knox – Knox Design Strategy’s namesake, founder and creative director – has always put design that produces results first. And that’s not going to change. Along with being the firm’s guiding spirit, Brandie is also an industry leader. A longtime member of the Legal Marketing Association (LMA), she was the 2020 chair of the New York Local Group, the largest in the organization. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, she led the organization in finding solutions to still bring people together for networking events – while at the same time guiding its members as they adapted to a new, remote way of doing business.

Born and raised in a (very) small North Carolina town, Brandie began drawing, painting and designing not long after she learned to hold a pencil. As she grew up, she embraced the entrepreneurial spirit her mother sparked in her. As Brandie puts it, her mom is a born entrepreneur who is also the handiest person she knows: “She can fix or build almost anything.”

After graduating from high school, Brandie was awarded a full scholarship to East Carolina University, earning her Bachelor of Arts in communication arts, and later, a Master of Fine Arts degree; soon thereafter she earned a position on the faculty. But Brandie is always looking forward, and she had her sights set on something different.

In 2002, she moved to New York and worked at a small design agency, where she collaborated on her first law firm website, as well as projects for clients such as General Electric, the Bank of New York and Johnson & Johnson. Two years later, she was recruited to join the design team for Shearman & Sterling, a renowned AmLaw 50 law firm with more than 850 attorneys in offices around the world.

Brandie spent the next five years at Shearman, steeped in every aspect of legal marketing and design for law firms. This included organizing workflows, managing people and teams, designing a lot of great work, and most of all, thoroughly learning how law firms operated, competed and prospered.

In 2009, she was ready to launch her own branding and design firm, and Knox Design Strategy was born.

Beginning with early clients such as Simpson Thacher and Kaye Scholer, Brandie and her team focused on using brand strategy and design to solve real-world business problems. To her, design that doesn’t help clients compete is pretty, but sort of useless. Because she’s her entrepreneurial mother’s daughter, Brandie loves digging into her clients’ businesses and strategies, learning how they work and succeed, and creating designs that help meet their goals. Today, Knox Design Strategy is proud to have an ongoing working relationship with more than 30 law firm clients.

Whether it’s a website that’s elegant, well-designed and conveys just the right message, a logo that brands a firm at a glance, or a user interface that helps clients get things done quickly and efficiently, every Knox Design Strategy project reflects Brandie’s belief in the possibilities of design. Great design, she believes, is useful, effective – and above all – strategic.

And so is Brandie.
