In a crowded legal marketplace where many firms claim similar strengths – client service, responsiveness, and deep expertise – true differentiation is difficult to articulate and hard to sustain. Developing an authentic brand strategy for law firms requires moving past generic messaging to establish a clear market position grounded in business strategy.
I am proud to have contributed a chapter to Building a Business Development Culture and Strategy: A Management Guide for Law Firm Leadership, edited by Deborah B. Farone and published by Globe Law and Business. My chapter, “Brand positioning and differentiation – a practical framework,” outlines a structured methodology for effective law firm brand strategy.
The Brand Strategy Framework
Phase 1: Planning – Clarify business goals, establish stakeholder roles, and define decision-making authority upfront to maintain clear direction and buy-in.
Phase 2: Discovery – Gather qualitative data through design thinking workshops, internal and client interviews, and a competitive audit.
Phase 3: Synthesis – Identify persistent themes across all inputs to isolate key differentiators and formulate a positioning statement.
Phase 4: Strategy – Express that position consistently across all verbal and visual touchpoints, including firm messaging, visual identity, and web experience.
As an experienced law firm branding consultant, I help leadership teams put this framework into action to build a distinctive market presence. Visit our law firm brand strategy practice page to learn more about our process, or reach out directly to schedule a call.
